The sexual exposure chart is based on the assumption that each of your sexual partners has had the same number of partners as you have at that particular point. For example:
If you are the first sex partner for your first partner, your exposure is 1.
If you have sex with 2 different people, and you are the first for your first partner and the second for your second partner, then you've been exposed to 3 different people.
If you have sex with 3 different people, and you are the first for your first partner, the second for your second partner, and the third for your third, then you've been exposed to 7 different people.
If you have sex with 4 different people, and you are the first for your first partner, the second for your second partner, the third for your third, and the fourth for your fourth, then you've been exposed to 15 different people.

These exposure numbers get so large that they are almost unbelievable. In truth, this represents a simple model - one where everyone has had very few sexual partners. In real life, sexual exposure rates could be much higher.
The best way to avoid disease is to wait to become sexually active until after marriage and marry someone who has made the same commitment of abstinence until marriage.
